Clean, Safe Drinking Water Is Scarce - 1014 Words

But we take it for granted, we are wasting it, and we even pay for it a little too much to drink plastic bottles .Water is the basis of life. And yet today all over the world, too many people spend all day looking for it. In places like India Education suffering from sickness disappears. With a population of 1.2 billion according to the 2011 census, India has only 1,000 cubic meters of water per person, even using the higher estimate. A country is considered water-stressed if it has less than 1,700 cubic meters per person per year. For comparison, India had between 3,000 and 4,000 cubic meters per person in 1951, whereas the United States has nearly 8,000 cubic meters per person today. The second cause is poor water quality resulting from insufficient and delayed investment in urban water-treatment facilities. Water in most rivers in India is largely not fit for drinking, and in many stretches not even fit for bathing. Despite the G anga Action Plan, which was launched in 1984 to clean up the Ganges River in 25 years, much of the river remains polluted with a high coliform count at many places. The facilities created are also not properly maintained because adequate fees are not charged for the service. Moreover, industrial effluent standards are not enforced because the state pollution control boards have inadequate technical and human resources. The third problem is dwindling groundwater supplies due to over-extraction by farmers. This is because groundwater is an open-access resource and anyone can pump water from under his or her own land. Given how highly fragmented land ownership is in

The Structure Of The Church - 1533 Words

I went to the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal on a Sunday morning for the Mass service. I had never been to church before this, so my experience was a mixture of awe, confusion, resistance and understanding. Initially, I was shocked with some of the images presented, confused as to why certain practices happened, but open to embracing this new experience to the fullest. One of the first things that mesmerized me was the actual church building itself. The structure of the Church was breathtaking. I was unsure of where to enter because of how big the building was so, I followed behind a family. Upon entering, I was in awe with the inside of the cathedral. Visually, I noticed the candles on my left hand side and the hard-to-miss statue in the center of the church displaying Jesus the Christ on the cross. As I sat down, I noticed the variety of different people attending this service. The majority of the church was filled with seniors, parents, and their children. The environment was more relaxed than I was expecting, as half way through the service, a child began to cry and no one seemed to be annoyed because of this. The service was held entirely in French and, as I do not speak French, I had a pamphlet that guided me through the hour. The organs began to play five minutes before the service began. After, the Priest walked in carrying a large candle and was followed by 5 alter boys.
